Chromium isotopes track redox fluctuations in Proterozoic successions of the Chapada Diamantina, São Francisco craton, Brazil

چکیده

Abstract The Chapada Diamantina region in the São Francisco craton of eastern Brazil is composed sedimentary successions containing both Mesoproterozoic and Neoproterozoic carbonate levels, making it a key natural laboratory for understanding fluctuations Earth's biogeochemical cycles during its middle age. ca. 1.4–1.2 Ga Caboclo Formation stromatolites yielded unfractionated δ53Crauth (authigenic) (~−0.54‰ to +0.08‰). Ediacaran cap carbonates phosphatic Salitre Formation, on other hand, fractionated reaching as high +0.51‰, suggesting input 53Cr-rich Cr(VI), first delivered through meltwater-induced post–snowball Earth fluctuating redox conditions then weathering mobilization under fully oxygenated environment. acquired data set highlights very distinct throughout Proterozoic reinforces suggestion that after Cryogenian global glaciations, atmosphere hydrosphere became progressively Ediacaran-Cambrian transition.

Proterozoic microfossils from subsurface siliciclastic rocks of the São Francisco Craton, south-central Brazil

Compressed organic-walled microfossils attributable to five filamentous taxa, and ten coccoidal eight, (taxa originally spheroidal forms and two originally ellipsoidal, colonial forms), all having long time-ranges in the Proterozoic, have been identified in fine-grained siliciclastic sediments in cores from four bore holes cutting subsurface equivalents of the Mesoproterozoic Conselheiro Mata G...

Chemostratigraphy of the lower Bambuí Group , southwestern São Francisco Craton

Manuscript ID: 30285: Received in: 04/21/2015. Approved in: 02/12/2016. ABSTRACT: The Bambuí Group, the most extensive carbonate-siliciclastic cover on the São Francisco craton, has been a matter of debate because of its potential correlations to global glacial events. Unfortunately, most available chemostratigraphic data came from samples collected on surface rock exposures, ever susceptible t...

First pollen survey of murundus in the Chapada Diamantina region of the state of Bahia, Brazil

This was a pollen survey, in which we analyzed the sediments and moss polsters of murundus (termite mounds) in the Chapada Diamantina region of the state of Bahia, Brazil. Palynological treatment revealed the presence of 53 pollen types in murundus sediments, of which 23 were related to plants in the semi-arid zone and 30 remained unidentified. In moss polster samples, the pollen assemblage com...

The occurrence of microdiamonds in Mesoproterozoic Chapada Diamantina intrusive rocks--Bahia/Brazil.

The origin of diamonds from Serra do Espinhaço in Diamantina region (State of Minas Gerais) and in Chapada Diamantina, Lençóis region (State of Bahia) remains uncertain, even taking into account the ample research carried out during the last decades. The lack of typical satellite minerals in both districts makes a kimberlitic source for these diamonds uncertain. In mid 18th century the occurren...

Species richness and distribution of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in the Chapada Diamantina region, Bahia, Brazil.

Taxonomically, blackflies (Simuliidae) are among the best-known aquatic insects in Brazil. However, information on their distribution is lacking for many regions. We sampled simuliids in 50 streams in the Chapada Diamantina region, State of Bahia, located in three distinct geographical areas, 20 at Lençóis, 18 at Mucugê, and 12 at Rio de Contas. We analyzed simuliid species richness and distrib...
